ITEC Conference

I attended the ITEC (Iowa Technology Education Connection) conference this past week, and found much to reflect/act on in David Warlick’s keynote. Apparently many others did, too. I have attended plenty of conferences in which people bring their laptops and check their email or browse the Web during sessions, including me. Not so this time!  People used their laptops and smart phones to blog, Tweet, and back channel (with CoverItLive, a free tool) to discuss the sessions while they were happening. The results are impressive- I have found reactions to conference sessions posted in many place on the Web, and that happened during the sessions.

Warlick said the purpose of technology use must be to improve student learning. The 3 R’s that defined literacy for previous generations need to be replaced with the 4 E’s of contemporary literacy—teaching students how to:

  • Expose what is true
  • Employ information
  • Express ideas
  • Ethically use information

David Warlick’s blog post about the conference.

Dr. Zeitz of UNI–  blog post created during the Warlick presentation is a good summary of Warlick’s remarks.

Conference handouts are  here.

The best Tweet concerning the conference was posted by Seth Denney– It’s all about literacy:
